I'm Bob Hornal, founder of BestQuote Travel Insurance Agency - a comparable quote travel insurance website and Lloyd's-accepted coverholder. I have been a financial advisor for over twenty years, helping people with their insurance and investment needs.
I've also been fortunate enough to have travelled to over 30 countries. I know how much fun travel can be and how it can also bring undesired surprises and difficulties.
Before becoming a financial advisor, I went through the unfortunate experience of one of my parents passing away in the United States due to a sudden and unexpected change of health. There was no emergency medical travel insurance to cover hospital costs. Extended health covered $25,000 - which was five times the normal provincial coverage, but less than 20% of the total medical expenses.
That experience is why I wouldn't be doing my job as a financial advisor if I allowed my clients to travel without travel insurance. It's a reasonable and necessary expense for anyone travelling out of the country. It's important to have - and it's equally important to read the contract details before you buy it.
Why You Should Always Compare Travel Insurance
Contract details can vary widely between companies and so can the classification of medical risk they put you in, or the premium they ask you to pay. The older you become, the more important it is to shop around to find the coverage you need at a reasonable price.
Most travel insurance companies are competitive about one-third of the time, reasonably priced another third of the time — but the last third of the time they don't want the business, so they price the coverage unreasonably high.
Why? Because most distributors like banks, drug stores, credit unions, travel agents, automobile associations, etc... carry only one insurance policy. Even if that insurer doesn't want to take the risk of covering a particular traveller's profile, they have to offer it through that distributor, so they price it unreasonably. It's too bad that more than 90% of Canadian travel insurance purchases are made through distributors that carry only one policy. One size fits all never works well with travel insurance.
