What Can You Do With a Super Visa?
A little over a decade ago, the Canadian government announced that it was creating the “Parent and Grandparent Super Visa.” This Super Visa for Canada has completely changed how some visitors experience the country for the better.
Today, we’re going to cover all the Super Visa benefits, including what you can do with a Super Visa, eligibility requirements, and the application process.
All About The Super Visa
The Super Visa is often called the “parents or grandparents visa” because it allows eligible family members, such as parents and grandparents, to visit family in Canada for up to two years without the need to renew their status.
This is a convenient way for family members to enter Canada since it allows for multiple entries for a period of up to 10 years. It’s also ideal for visitors who want longer or impromptu stays in Canada to be with their children or grandchildren.
The Super Visa for parents and grandparents differs from your average visitor visa because of its flexibility. Even with a multiple-entry visitor visa, you’re limited to a six-month stay for each entry.
What You Can Do with a Super Visa:
- Remain in Canada for up to two years at a time without the need to renew your visa
- Arrive in Canada on short notice (eg. for family reunification) without needing to apply for a new visitor visa
- Submit a request for permanent residency, though this can be a lengthy process
What You Can’t Do with a Super Visa:
- Work. To work in the country you must be a Canadian citizen or apply for a work permit.
- Bring a dependent(s). This visa is only for eligible parents and grandparents.
Super Visa Eligibility Requirements
There are a few eligibility requirements that must be met before you can apply for this unique visa. Most importantly, you must be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
The Canadian government requires applicants to include a letter from their child or grandchild inviting them to stay. This document should also include a promise of financial support (since Super Visa holders can’t work), a list of people in the household, and a copy of their Canadian citizenship or permanent residence document.
If you’re applying for a Super Visa, you must have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company to cover health care and emergency medical expenses. This insurance coverage must be valid for at least one year from the date of entry and include at least $100,000 of medical coverage.
Quotes are not accepted for this step. Applicants must prove their health insurance plan has been paid.
